Jungian Odyssey Series
A Book Series from Spring
Spring Journal Books is honored to publish in collaboration with ISAPZURICH, the International School of Analytical Psychology in Zurich, Switzerland, www.isapzurich.com, the Jungian Odyssey Series. The aim of this Series is to publish annually a book composed of the papers presented at ISAP's Jungian Odyssey conferences and retreats, which are held each spring in a different and beautiful location in Switzerland and are based upon a theme that arises from the genius loci, the spirit of the place where the conference convenes. The authors are Jungian training analysts and faculty members at ISAPZURICH, joined by guest scholars.
The second book in this series, forthcoming, is Destruction and Creation: Facing the Ambiguities of Power, Jungian Odyssey Series, Vol. II:
Destruction and Creation: Facing the Ambiguities of Power, Jungian Odyssey Series, Vol. II
Series Editors: Stacy Wirth, Isabelle Meier, John Hill
This collection of essays is the second to ensue from the Jungian Odyssey, which began in 2006 and developed into an annual conference and retreat in Switzerland. The authors are Jungian training analysts and faculty members at ISAPZURICH, joined by guest scholars, all of whom lectured at the Jungian Odyssey 2009.
This volume "… explore[s] the paradoxes of our power and powerlessness in this spinning universe. Power itself is neutral, tasked to address, perhaps resolve the dilemmas of life. Yet from the exercise of power joy, suffering, injustice, retribution, rectification, enlightenment, degradation, and enlargement may flow. As a species, we will tolerate ambiguity, preferring clarity and control. But the anfractuosities of life seldom cooperate and we are left to wrestle with the paradoxes of power, powerlessness, and destructivity. As Blaise Pascal … noted, [we are] as fragile as a reed, but we are a thinking, feeling, imaginative reed that may also conjure with the powers that may so casually destroy us. The rich essays [presented here] confront us with the paradoxes of power, and solicit our attentiveness to its more conscious exercise." – James Hollis, PhD, Jungian Analyst and author of What Matters Most: Living a More Considered Life

This year's Odyssey returns to the 2007 setting of Gersau and the dazzling Lake Lucerne. Opposite Gersau lies the Rütli Meadow, at which—legend has it—a secret pact united the first three (erstwhile stubbornly independent) cantons against the Habsburg oppressors (1291): "We want to be a band of brothers, sticking together through thick and thin!" The whole region is permeated with a history and spirit that join trust and betrayal in the forging of new bonds and new identity. The full week of lectures, seminars and excursions can be viewed at www.jungianodyssey.ch.
