Analytical Psychology & Contemporary Culture
A New Book Series from Spring
In our rapidly changing contemporary world, analytical psychology is confronted ever anew with the challenge of remaining relevant. To take on this challenge, Spring Journal Books has created a new series under the title Analytical Psychology & Contemporary Culture. The goal of the series is to bring analytical psychology into a cross-fertilizing dialogue with the fundamental issues of our time. The series will explore the multiple, interpenetrating relationships between history, mythology, politics, economics, sociology, and the arts as they express themselves in contemporary culture. At the heart of our mission is the creative exploration of the psyche’s response to a world in rapid transition from the evolving perspectives of analytical psychology.
Series Editor: Thomas Singer, M.D.
Dr. Singer has long been interested in this interface as reflected in the topics he has addressed in his books and articles. He has reflected on baseball as a college player, a lifelong fan, and as a Jungian analyst in his A Fan's Guide to Baseball Fever. He has been a student of the interface between politics, social conflict, and Jungian psychology in his books, The Vision Thing and The Cultural Complex. He has written on the relationship between modern psychiatry and Jungian psychology in Who's the Patient Here? He has contributed articles focusing on contemporary film (Spielberg's Munich) and modern opera (John Adam's Dr. Atomic). Drawing on his keen interest in contemporary culture and the tradition of analytical psychology, Dr. Singer will be developing this new series with an eye to all the different arenas of social, political, economic, legal, and cultural life in which a Jungian perspective might be relevant.
Violence in History, Culture, and the Psyche
Author: Luigi Zoja
Publication Date: August 2009
Drawn from lectures by Luigi Zoja at conferences in Europe and the Americas between 2000 and 2007, this collection probes in depth one of the core issues that vex contemporary life: violence in all its myriad forms. Zoja has circumambulated the globe in his travels and in his quest to understanding contemporary concerns, like violence, in a broad historical, mythological, and psychological context, and he thus brings a breadth of vision to bear on this terrifying subject. His basic approach is that of analytical psychology, but he also avails himself of the insights of sociology, anthropology, philosophy, and other disciplines. The scope of vision found in these essays makes this collection unique and an invaluable contribution to Jungian thought on the theme of violence and is the perfect inaugural volume for this new book series.
Luigi Zoja is a Jungian analyst who lectures, teaches, and maintains a private practice in Milan, Italy. A former president of the International Association of Analytical Psychology, he is the author of a number of books about analytical psychology which have been translated into 14 languages. His books include: Ethics and Analysis: Philosophical Perspectives and Their Application in Therapy (2007), Cultivating the Soul (2005), Jungian Reflections on September 11: A Global Nightmare (co-edited with Donald Williams) (2002), The Father: Historical, Psychological, and Cultural Perspectives (2001), Drugs, Addiction and Initiation: The Modern Search for Ritual (2000), and Growth and Guilt: Psychology and the Limits of Development (1995).
